What it does#
Growth is a tabbed surface combining two related things that were previously separate pages:
Goals & north star — the metric you have chosen to be the one that matters, and the goals under it.
Growth & viral loops — the loops by which your users bring more users.
When to use it#
The goals tab is worth setting up once and revisiting quarterly. Its value is not measurement — every number here exists elsewhere — it is agreement. A team without one nominated metric optimises in several directions, and the dashboard's breadth makes that easier rather than harder: with a hundred and forty pages, everyone can find data supporting their priority.
The loops tab is for a specific question: does your product grow itself? A loop that works changes the economics of everything, because acquisition partly funds itself. Most products do not have one, and knowing that honestly is more useful than assuming one exists.
Workflow#
Pick one north-star metric, and only one
Two north stars is no north star. It should be the number that, if it goes up, means the product is genuinely more valuable to more people.
Choose a metric that is hard to game
Revenue and active users are both gameable in ways that make the product worse. Something closer to delivered value resists that.
Measure the loop, do not assume it
A viral loop either shows up in the numbers or does not exist. Referral volume relative to new users is the check — see Partners for the program side.
Review goals on a slow cadence
Goals reset too often stop being goals. Quarterly is usually right.
Permissions and prerequisites#
Requires the underlying metrics to exist. A goal on an event you do not track cannot be measured.
Limits and edge cases#
Two separate panels, two separate backends behind one shell.
A goal is a target, not a forecast. Nothing here predicts whether you will hit it.
Loops need volume to be visible. A weak loop is indistinguishable from no loop at small scale.
The metrics are the same ones on other pages, so a difference is a window difference.
Troubleshooting#
A goal shows no progress. The metric behind it has no data, or the event was renamed. Check Events.
Loop metrics look like zero. Most products have no measurable viral loop. That is a finding, not a fault.
