What it does#
QR codes generates a scannable code for a tracking link, downloadable as an image, and reports scans against it.
Because the code encodes a tracking link, a scan is attributed like any other click — which is the whole point. A QR code on a poster is otherwise completely unmeasurable.
When to use it#
For anything physical or off-screen: packaging, print, events, in-store, a slide at a conference. It is the only bridge between an offline placement and your attribution data.
The measurement is worth more than it first appears. Offline marketing is usually evaluated on gut feel because nothing connects it to an outcome; a QR code turns a poster into a channel with a conversion rate.
Workflow#
Build the tracking link first, with distinct parameters
One code per placement. A single code across three placements measures the total and tells you nothing about which worked.
Test the scan from a phone before printing
Print is unrecoverable. Scan it yourself, from the distance and lighting the real placement will have.
Print larger than you think you need
Scan failure is silent and looks exactly like disinterest. Codes that are too small or too low-contrast simply do not get scanned.
Use a deep link where the audience may have the app
An app user scanning into a browser is a conversion lost at the last step.
Permissions and prerequisites#
Requires a tracking link to encode. Deep-link targets additionally need the app-side URL configuration.
Limits and edge cases#
Scans are not people. One person can scan twice; a scan that never loads the page is not a visit.
Attribution is only as good as the link's parameters. An untagged link behind a code measures nothing.
Environmental failure is invisible. Poor lighting, glare, damage or distance produce no data, indistinguishable from nobody caring.
Some cameras handle codes better than others. Test on more than your own phone.
Troubleshooting#
Code generated but no scans. Before assuming the placement failed: verify the code scans at all, at the real size and in real conditions.
Scans recorded but no attributed sessions. The link's parameters are being lost — check for a redirect stripping the query string.
Two placements report as one. They share a link. Use a distinct one per placement.
Where the data comes from#
A QR code encodes a tracking link, which is what makes an offline placement measurable at all.
