I Don’t Need More Session Replays. I Need the Right One.

I like session replay, but I almost never open a replay tool just to browse sessions.

Nobody has time for that.

If there are 80,000 sessions from the last week, the fact that I technically can watch all of them doesn't help me very much.

Usually I'm already looking for something.

Checkout broke.

A user reported a weird bug.

An error started showing up after a deploy.

Conversion dropped.

Somebody says the Save button “does nothing.”

That's when I want replay.

And at that point I don't want a list of sessions sorted by time.

I want the session that has the thing I'm already looking at.

If I'm staring at:

PaymentInitializationError

just show me the sessions where that happened.

That's it.

Let me click one and see what happened before the error.

Maybe the user clicked Pay twice.

Maybe the request took eight seconds.

Maybe the button never disabled, so they kept clicking it.

Maybe the API returned a 500 and the UI swallowed the error.

Maybe nothing weird happened at all and the bug is somewhere else.

Any of those answers are useful.

What's not useful is opening another tool, copying the user ID, searching for the same person, checking timestamps, and hoping I found the same session.

I've done that enough times.

The same thing applies to funnels.

If 600 users dropped between Payment and Success, I don't want to randomly watch checkout sessions.

Give me those 600.

Or better, tell me that 180 of them had a failed request, 70 hit a frontend error, and 40 kept clicking the same button.

Then I'll decide what I want to watch.

That's more or less how I think replay should work.

Not as this giant library of recordings.

More like evidence attached to everything else.

Honestly, if I have to search through replay to find the bug, we already made the developer do too much work.
