What it does#
Data export requests a download of your data. Each request becomes a job you can watch through its states — pending, running, ready, failed or expired — and download while it is ready.
For a continuous feed into your own analytics stack rather than a one-off file, use Warehouse export instead. This page is for point-in-time extraction.
When to use it#
Three cases.
Before deleting anything. Removing an app, purging an environment, or lowering a retention period destroys data permanently. Export first — there is no recovery afterwards.
Subject access and deletion requests. When someone asks what you hold about them, an export is the mechanism.
Analysis the dashboard cannot do. Occasionally you need the raw rows in your own tools.
Workflow#
Request it before you need it, not after
Export is the only defence against an irreversible deletion. Ordering matters more here than anywhere else in settings.
Watch the job to ready
Large exports take time. A job in
runningis working;failedneeds re-requesting.Download promptly
Ready files expire.
expiredmeans the job succeeded and the artifact is gone — you have to request again.Store it as carefully as the original
An exported file is your data outside the platform's controls, including outside its retention policy.
Permissions and prerequisites#
Requires an administrative role. Both export.requested and export.downloaded are recorded in the
audit log — exports are tracked precisely because they move data
outside the platform.
Limits and edge cases#
A snapshot, not a subscription. Nothing is added to a completed export.
Ready files expire. Do not treat the platform as your archive.
You cannot export what retention already deleted. Retention wins, and it is not reversible.
Failed jobs need re-requesting; they do not retry indefinitely.
Troubleshooting#
Job failed. Re-request. If it fails repeatedly, the requested range is probably too large — narrow it.
File expired before I downloaded it. Request again. There is no way to recover the expired artifact.
Export is missing older data. It was already deleted by retention. Check your retention periods.
